Tocqueville admired the American associative fabric, that "habitat of liberty" which prevented the rise of arbitrary power. Today, that fabric is being deliberately torn apart.
The history of this great nation is a chronicle of the perpetual struggle to expand the circles of liberty, justice, and law. Abraham Lincoln, in preserving the Union, stated that a "house divided against itself cannot stand." Franklin Delano Roosevelt, facing the shadow of totalitarianism, spoke of the "four essential freedoms." John F. Kennedy urged every citizen to ask what they could do for their country. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of a nation where men would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. These voices echo in the collective conscience, reminding us that democracy is not a gift but a daily, vigilant, and costly achievement.
Today, that achievement is under unprecedented attack. The administration of Donald J. Trump has degenerated into a personalist kleptocracy that systematically tramples constitutional principles, corrodes institutions, and shames the United States before the world. This is not mere political disagreement but a succession of acts that border on—and often cross into—illegality and barbarism.
We have observed, first with horror and then with organized indignation:
The tacit support of a genocide in Gaza, making us complicit in unspeakable suffering.
The threats and warlike adventures against Venezuela, Cuba, Greenland, and others, replacing diplomacy with blackmail and brute force.
The transformation of immigration agencies into a modern Gestapo, ICE, responsible for illegal deportations and the tragic deaths of citizens like Renee Nicole Good, a mother, and Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a heroic nurse serving our veterans. Their deaths are not isolated incidents; they are symptoms of a state that has lost compassion and respect for life.
The moral and legal corruption personified in the President himself: 34 convictions for falsifying business records, proven financial fraud, sexual abuse, and defamation against E. Jean Carroll, and serious allegations of pedophilia that stain the highest office.
As Bernie Sanders has said: "This is not about left or right. It is about defending common decency and justice against a man who sees the Presidency as a personal business and the American people as subjects to be plundered. We say: Enough!"
President Barack Obama warned us: "Democracy is not automatic. It must be nurtured, it must be defended." And today, that defense requires civic courage. Millions have already taken to the streets, from New York to Los Angeles, Chicago to Houston, raising a unified cry that echoes that of the Revolution: "No King!" We will not accept a king, a despot, a man above the law.
Senator Kamala Harris proclaims: "We are witnessing a systematic abuse of power that wounds the soul of our nation. ICE, under this administration, personifies the worst of authoritarianism. Defending our immigrant values is defending the very idea of America."
The Governor of California echoes: "Our state, and all states that believe in human dignity, will not bow. We will resist illegality and protect our people."
This is not merely an American appeal. It is a cry from Humanity. The new de facto "Constitution" that Trump seeks to impose—based on whim, impunity, and contempt for international law—is a planetary threat. It emboldens tyrants, undermines decades-old alliances, ridicules the fight against the climate crisis, and endangers global peace.
Therefore, our voice joins the international chorus:
The UN Secretary-General reminds us that respect for the UN Charter and human rights begins at home.
The European Economic Community and the Presidents of Germany, France, and Spain affirm: the transatlantic alliance is built on shared values, not on mercantile interests subject to the whims of one man.
The Presidents of Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Canada, and the nations of Africa and Asia, know all too well: arrogant imperialism and destabilization are recipes for the suffering of their people.
China, in its complex relationship with the U.S., observes the hypocrisy of those who preach rules they do not follow.
Planet Earth cries out for leaders who listen to science, not deny it for profit.
What will be next? This is the question that hangs over all of us. The next country invaded? The next right revoked? The next life brutalized by ICE? The next democratic institution strangled?
History will not judge kindly those who, in a moment of crisis, remained silent. History calls us to act. The House of Representatives, with the courage of its Democratic members and conscience-driven Republicans, has the constitutional and moral duty to initiate impeachment. The Senate has the obligation to judge with serenity and severity.
We conclude, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, that this nation, "under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." So that this promise does not perish, to honor the sacrifices of all who came before us, and to secure a future of dignity for those who will come after, we, the American people, in unison with Humanity and with History itself, demand:
The impeachment of Donald J. Trump. Now.
